Karateka Kusalani Gayathrika does HFC, Marawila proud

Karate Gold Medalist, Netball and Elle Player and Athlete Wanigasekera Arachchige Kusalani Gayathrika of Holy Family Convent Marawila brought honour and glory to her Alma Mater and her Motherland.

She was admitted to the Primary School of Holy Family Convent Marawila in 2005 and the then Principal was Sister Asuntha and her first class teacher was Mrs. Denakumbura. When she was in under 11 she participated in the school Inter House Annual Athletic Sports Meet and became first in 50 and 75 metre races and in 2010 she was admitted to the Grade Six of Holy Family Convent Senior School Marawila and the Principal was Sister Monika.

She did not want to pursue athletics but representing her house in the under 19 age group she did Javelin and came first and at the divisional meet she was placed third and in the following year too she came first at the schools sports meet and at the Divisional meet she came third and her teachers in charge were Mrs. Pramitha and Mrs. Susila.

Though she did athletics her forte is Karate and in 2014 she commenced Karate under Sugath Kumara and she participated in the meet in 2015 conducted by Karate Do Association Naga Oka in Sri Lanka and 11 members participated in Kumite and she won a Bronze and in Kata she was un successful and in the same year she took part in the Kumite Open Meet under 35 lbs and she won a Bronze Medal

In the following year she participated in the National Meet under 17 age group and she won a Gold Medal in Kumite and another Gold Medal in Kata Event held in Sri Lanka. In the 2017 National meet participating in the under 16/17 Kumite she won a Gold Medal while in Kata she came upto the Best Eight.

In the same year Karate Do Meet competing in under 18 age group she came second in Kata and with these performances under her belt she was selected for the Shimoga Open International Meet held in Shimoga, Bangalore, India and competing in the under 17 age group she won a Gold Medal in Kumite and it was a very fine exposure for Kusalani and in 2018 National Karate Championship she came third in Kumite and second in Kata and in the same year at the North Western Provincial Meet conducted by Karate Do Federation she won a Gold Medal in the under 18 age group for Kumite and Silver Medal for Kata and in the Puttalam District Tournament and in the same age group in Kumite and Silver Medal in Kata. In 2018 at the fifth Open Invitation Shotokan Karate Open Championship in the under 21 age group held in Sri Lanka she won a Gold Medal for Kata and Bronze Medal for Kumite and in the Karate Festival meet under 19 age group she came first and at the Open International Karate Championship she won a Gold Medal for Kata and silver for Kumite and in the same year she was awarded the school colours for Karate.

In addition she took part in Netball and in the under 12 Inter House Meet they came third and in the under 14 Milo Tournament they were second in Divisional and in Provincial Meet they came up to Best Eight and in the 15 tournament they were the first and in the following year they came third and in the under 16 too they were third and in the under 19 they came second in Provincial. She captained the under 12 team in 2011 and Mrs. Prasadi was the Teacher in Charge.

Representing the Elle Team in under 17 age group in 2017 they were the Inter House, Divisional, Zonal and District champions. In 2018 All Island Meet they lost to St. Sebastian’s Katuneriya.

Her parents Rohana Sisira Kumara and Ushani Perera have been instumental in her success.
