Isiri Meegammana cricketer, athlete and netball player

15 year old Isiri Meegammana, Grade Eleven student of Mahamaya Girls College,Kandy is the youngest Captain of the Cricket team of Mahamaya to participate at the All Island Division two Girls Cricket tournament conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association held in the year 2019. Isiri is a left arm Medium pace Bowler and a right hand middle order batswoman. Her talent was spotted by the writer who was the Cricket Coach of the School assisted by E.M.U.Chandrathilak, the Assistant Coach.

Isiri started her Cricket career in the year 2016 at the age of 12 years and she was selected to the School Soft Ball Cricket team and after sometime she managed to get into the Hard Ball Cricket team. She represented the School team at the Soft Ball Cricket tournament and claimed three wickets for 25 runs against Gothami Vidyalaya,Kandy in her debut. In her second year she came up as a Batswoman who scored 30 runs in the semi finals against St.Anthonys’ Girls School and she played hard ball cricket too simultaneously and scored 35 runs and took 3 wickets for 28 runs against the Dehiattakandiya Central School in 2018.

Isiri took a step forward in her Cricket career when she bagged 4 wickets for 30 runs against Paliniks Cricket Club, Colombo but her outstanding bowling feat did not bring the victory they expected. In 2018 she bagged the Best Bowlers title by claiming 5 wickets for 35 runs at the return Match against Palinks CC. In the School Cricket tournaments she led her side to become one of the Best Eight teams in the Island at the Div.ision two Girls Schools Cricket tournament held in 2018 but unfortunately Mahamaya Cricket team could not enter the particular Cricket Tournament in the year 2019 due to unavoidable circumstances.

Isiri was selected to the Kandy District womens Cricket team for her outstanding display.

Her talent is not limited to Cricket, she is a member of the School Netball team from 2015 to date and she was in different age groups from under 13 onwards, at the Under 15 schools Runners-up Netball team in the Provincial Netball Tournament in 2017. Her Netball Coaches were Indu Ranasinghe, Thishali Jayapala and Thakshila Chandrasekera. She is an Athlete as well and in the sprint events of the School House Meets she has won 50,100, 400 M.Races and High Jump and Long Jump events in different age groups from 8 years to 15 years.

Her main interest is to continue cricket as well as her studies and she is thankful to her Coaches as well as the Principal, POG and Teachers-in-charge of the School and her Parents for the encouragement given to her.
