Left hand batsman and left arm leg-spinner Sithum Akilanka of St. Sebastian’s College Katuneriya gave a fine all-round display in the Under 19 Division Two inter School Cricket (Two day) tournament conducted by Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association.
Sithum Akilanka scored 426 runs with a half century and captured 111 wickets for 1154 runs with eight 5 wicket hauls and four 10 wicket hauls in the last season 2019/2020. His best bowling performance in an innings was 7 for 7 runs against Asoka Vidyalaya Colombo and best bowling performance in a game was match bag of 12 wickets for 22 runs against Asoka Vidyalaya Colombo. His best all-round performance was against St. Mary’s Kegalle.
Sithum Akilanka started his school cricket career at Pannala National School at under 13 age limit in 2012. Chandana Danansooriya was his first coach. He represented the college first XI team in 2013 as a fresher and claimed over 50 wickets in the under 19 division Three tournament.
He represented the under 15 team in two seasons 2014 and 2015 under coaches Kasun Ruberu and Jaliya Madhusanka. He represented Kurunegala district under 15 team in the Prima Champions Trophy Inter district Cricket tournament in 2016.
He joined St. Sebastian’s College Katuneriya from under 17 age limit in 2016 under the guidance of Anton Costa. Sithum took 48 wickets in the under 19 division two tournament in 2016. He claimed 11 wickets in the match against their arch rival St. Peter’s College Negombo in the annual big match in 2017. He was adjudged best bowler and man of the match.
He represented the North Western province Under 19 team in the inter provincial tournament in 2018.
He was deputy skipper of the college first XI team in the 2019/2020 season under coaches Samitha Costa and Prasath Malith. He scored 426 runs and claimed 111 wickets for 1159 runs (Ave. 10.44) in 16 matches . St. Sebastian’s College Katuneriya qualified to the quarter final in the tournament. (Due to the prevailing health concerns (Covid-19), the SLSCA decided to postpone the ongoing Under 19 all tournament matches until further notice from March 15.
