H.M.K. Chethiya Ekanayake, Grade13 student of Dheerananda Central College, Pilimatalawa is one of the outstanding boxers produced by the School and his Boxing Coach is K.K.Sunil, a former Best Boxer at the Stubbs Shield Boxing Meet. He guided Chethiya from the start and his first appearance in a Boxing Meet was in the year 2014 when Chethiya became the Runner-up
in the Weight Class of 33-35 Kg. class and won a Silver medal at the LV.Jayaweera Memorial Boxing Meet held at the Nawalapitiya Sports Complex Boxing Ring.
He became Runner-up at the All Island Boxing Championship held at the Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo competing in the higher weight class of 35-37 Kg. Chethiya competed in the TB Jayah Boxing Meet held at the Jayathillake Sports Complex, Nawalapitiya in the weight class of 50-52 Kg. and won a Gold Medal and also won a Silver Medal at the Sri Lanka Schools Boxing Meet competing in the same weight class in both meets in the year 2016. In the year 2017 he won a bronze Medal at the Youth Boxing Championship in the weight class of 52-56Kg.
He went up the ladder of success in the year 2018 when he won a Gold Medal at the Youth Boxing Championship held at Ingiriya fighting under the weight class of 56-60 Kg. In the same year he represented Sri Lanka at the Boxing Meet held abroad at Taipei City and won a Bronze Medal in the 56-60 Kg. weight class.
Again in the year 2019 which was a fine year for Chethiya who loves Boxing he won two Gold Medals at the Junior National Boxing Meet and at the All Island Boxing Meet participating in the 56-60 Kg.weight class in the Meets held at Matara and Nawalapitiya respectively.
He also had the opportunity of representing the country at the King of the Ring Boxing Meet held in Sweden without success but he gained a lot of experience by taking part in this Meet.
In the same year he had to be satisfied with a Bronze Medal at the National Games participating at the 56-60 Kg. weight class.
Chethiya won his weight class of 64-69 Kg. and qualified for the National Boxing Meet but it was postponed indefinitely due to Covid-19 epidemic. He is thankful to his Coach who helped him to come up to this standard in boxing and has started practicing with the intention of winning a Medal at the Asian Games.
