Chenul Methmin Withanachchi is a Grade.6 Student of St.Joseph’s College,Nugegoda who is a Cricketer, Athlete and a Swimmer. Little Chenul has played in so many Cricket tournaments so far and at the beginning of the year 2018 as a Junior Cricketer he represented his first school, Rotary International School, Delkanda and showed much potential in Batting
in the Under 13 Div.III Cricket tournament. He scored 42 against Ananda College, 45 against St.John’s Nugegoda , 36 against Methodist College,Rawathawatte, 38 against Homagama Central and 26 against Thurstan College.As a right arm leg spinner he claimed 6 for 46 against Methodist College,Rawatawatte , 5 for 52 against Ananda College and 4 for 20 against St.John’s ,Nugegoda. For his outstanding performances ,Chenul was awarded a Scholarship by St.Joseph’s College Nugegoda in the year 2019 and he showed his consistency in batting after joining that school. At the Under 13 Division III Cricket tournament he scored 72 runs against Lyceum International School,Nugegoda, 44 against Ananda College, 49 against Sri Sumangala, Panadura. At that time he did not perform well in bowling and he claimed only 2 wickets for 37 runs against Christ King College,Pannipitiya but he remained as an extra wicket keeper of the School team.
While representing his School he joined the SSC School of Cricket in the year 2015 as a 6 year old school boy and played for the Cricket Carnivals of the SSC from 2015 to 2019 for five consecutive years. Chenul became best fielder in the under 10 age category at the SSC Cricket carnival played against NCC and CCC and also participated in the year 2017 as an Under 11 player and scored 48 runs claiming 3 wickets at the Sanath Jayasuriya Trophy Cricket tournament.
Again he showed his talent in batting and bowling in the year 2018 scoring 30 runs and claiming 8 wickets to help SSC Cricket School to become Champions. He was awarded DDP Alwis Challenge Trophy for his performances in the same year.
He claimed 12 wickets at the Colombo Premier Cricket Foundation Cricket Tournament.
In 2019 he showed his real talent in batting when he scored 139 runs in 71 balls with 6 Sixes and this is a very rare achievement for a 10 year old Sri Lankan School boy and in addition he scored heavily in the tournament with an unbeaten knock of 50 against Colts CC 53 against Colombo Premier team and 57 runs against CCC. He claimed 12 wickets in the tournament as the Captain of the Under 10 team of SSC School of Cricket and was adjudged Man of the Series.
In Athletics, he was the winner of the 100 Metres and in Swimming 50 and 100 Metres Free Style Champion at his School, St.Joseph’s Nugegoda in the Under 10 age category.
His Cricket skills are from his family and his father Ashan Withanachchi represented Sri Sumangala,Panadura and later Ragama CC in the premier League. His grandfather, Anuruddha Withanachchi played for St.Benedicts,Kotahena and represented Sri Lanka Schools under former Sri Lanka Skipper Anura Tennakoon and as a left arm paceman in the Sixties and played for Sri Lanka Air force as well.
