National chess team to compete at FIDE Online Chess Olympiad 2020

The World Chess Federation (FIDE) has decided to conduct an online Chess Olympiad for 2020 to be held from July 24 to August 25. The sports organization which has the most number of member countries only second to IOC is expecting at least 180 countries will participate in the event. A new format is also introduced for the event as two males, two females, one Junior boy and a girl of under 20 to include in a team. A country may include the same number of reserves as well. The event will be staged in five stages and Sri Lanka is in the 3rd stage and will start the event on August 4.

The National Selection Committee for chess has selected the following team members to participate in this event.

Devnethmi Dahampriya (Visakha Vidyalaya Colombo), 4. Ashvini Pavalchandran (Wycherly International School Colombo), 5. L.M.S.T. De Silva (Nalanda College Colombo), 6. Sayuni Gihansa Jayaweera (Dharmasoka College Ambalangda), 7. G.C. Anuruddha (Kandy YMCA CC), 8. Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage (Ananda College Colombo), 9. Nethmi Fernando (Girls High School, Kandy), 10. Sachini Ranasinghe (Nf3 Chess Club), 11. Minul Sanjula Doluweera (Royal College Colombo), 12. Niklesha Tharushi (Visakha Vidyalaya Colombo)

The Chess Federation of Sri Lanka has appointed Ransith Fernando as the team manager and Rajeendra Kalugampitiya as the coach of the team. - YK
