K. D. S. Ruwan Chandra

The Ministry of Sport (MOS) granted the final deadline to hold respective Annual General Meetings (AGM) of all sports bodies on or before August 31, this was confirmed by the K.D.S. Ruwan Chandra, Secretary, Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, speaking to Daily News yesterday.

The initial deadline for these bodies was dated May 31, but due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, MOS decided to grant an extension to be fair by these sports bodies until end of August. Over seventy

federations are under the purview of MOS and 27 of them are yet to finalize their General Elections.

After a layover of almost over three months due the pandemic, the MOS granted permission for over seven Federations to resume their National pool practices, which included Cricket, Football, Rugby, Athletics,

Weight Lifting, Wushu and Gymnastic. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) was the first to adhere this call and rescheduled their domestic Premier Club Cricket Tournament, which has been postponed, due some technical

issues regarding the adjustments made to playing format. But they are likely to restart this tournament soon after the General Elections held on August 5.

The SLC also conducted few team building camps using their National coaches in Colombo and in the outstations. Coincide with the domestic tournament schedule, they were to unveil the Lanka Premier League

(LPL) which was also scheduled to begin soon after the elections. LPL is also likely to be postponed due to various reason including the closure of Bandaranaike International Airport, which will deprive of obtaining the services of foreign players.

The Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) too resumed their National Pool on the June 22, after clearing the all important PCR tests. They too are struggling to conduct their tailor made tournament called “The

President’s Trophy”, which was to kick off from July 26, now delayed until August 9 due to the escalation of the pandemic.

The Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) is another Federation which is to finalize their nomination by next Monday (July 20), where the elections is fixed for end of August.

“We have given time until 31 August to finalize their respective AGM’s. Initially the deadline was end of May. Due to the outbreak of the pandemic followed by the lockdown most of these Federations failed to conduct their AGM’s. Another 27 Federations are yet to hold the elections, for which we have clearly advised them to strictly comply with the guidelines and deadlines.” Said K. D. S. Ruwan Chandra, Secretary, Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs.
