SL target medals at Asian Wushu Meet in India

Sri Lanka aiming for medals at Asian Wushu Championships

The Sri Lanka Wushu Federation (SLWF) is planning to field a nine-member contingent for the 10th Asian Wushu Championships which will be staged from November 2 to 9 in New Delhi, India.

The SLWF has already convened the National Pool comprising 56 players in Sanda and Taolu categories in preparation for this event under the guidance of Coaches Ruchira Bodinayake and Kapila Sabapathi.

Top competitors from over 40 countries are expected to participate in the Asian Wushu Championships with Sri Lanka aiming for a gold medal and two silver medals at this event.

However, it will be a challenging task for the Sri Lankan competitors considering the fact that China and Iran are currently leading the World Rankings in wushu.

Sri Lanka had a rich haul of 13 medals at the 13th South Asian Games (SAG) held in Kathmandu, Nepal last year.

They won two gold medals, five silver medals and six bronze medals. The gold medals came in the Taolu event from Namal Anuradha (Men’s) and Thilini Gunasekera (Women’s).

Meanwhile the South Asian Wushu Federation is expected to stage the South Asian Wushu Championships in 2021 and the SLWF has already agreed to host this event.

Competitors from six countries comprising India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Maldives and hosts Sri Lanka are expected to participate in this tournament.

Apart from the Asian Wushu Championships, the SLWF is also geared towards participating in the World Wushu Championships to be held in Dallas, United States of America next year.
