Lanka’s Naveed Nawaz to continue as Bangladesh’s under 19 coach

Bangladesh Under-19 head Coach Naveed Nawaz with the Under-19 World Cup trophy after their victory over India in the finales.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has extended the contract of Naveed Nawaz as National Under-19 team head Coach until 2023. Former Sri Lankan National player Nawaz showed his capabilities as a coach by guiding his charges to win the Under-19 World Cup.

Naveed not only became the first ever Sri Lankan coach to win an ICC trophy , but also put Bangladesh cricket in the elite league of World Cup winners. It was the first ever ICC trophy for ‘Bangla Tigers’ and credit for this marvellous achievement goes to Naveed to a large extent.

The dedicated coach Nawaz was responsible for overseeing Bangladesh Under 19 team programme and prepared the side for the ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup 2020 in South Africa. In the final Bangladesh defeated favourites India to take the maiden ICC trophy and that was the best achievement by Bangladesh cricketers .

The former Sri Lankan cricketer and an accomplished first class left hand batsman, Nawaz has been involved in different coaching roles since retiring as a player in 2004. He was Sri Lanka Under 19 Head Coach from

2009 to 2014 and also worked as a Batting Coach for the Sri Lanka Emerging Players Squad in 2014-15. Newaz is a Cricket Australia High Performance (Level Three) Coach.

Nawaz the 46 year old coach was an unlucky cricketer who played only one test match against Bangladesh at SSC grounds in July 2002. In his solitary test match he scored 21 in the first innings and made a superb unbeaten knock of 78 in the second innings as number three batsman to guide Sri Lanka to victory . He has scored consistently for his clubs NCC and Bloomfield for a number of years while maintaining a good average but he was unlucky in not regaining his place in the National side for a long period having also played three ODI’s .. In Sri Lanka domestic cricket, he has coached prestigious Clubs like Nondescripts Cricket Club (NCC), Moors Cricket Club and Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) and gained a reputation as a hard working and visionary Coach.

, He was drafted by Sri Lanka Cricket as Women’s Team consultant coach and was later promoted as Under19 Coach..

He was appointed under 19 Bangladesh coach in 2018.His coaching ability was highly appreciated by BCB after getting the maiden under 19 world cup victory . Meanwhile BCB is planning to use Newaz in other game development projects as well in the coming days as his contract runs until 2023 and he is looking forward to it.
