SLC should develop cricket in rural areas, says former Rajans skipper Ranasinghe

Siri Ranasinghe, former Cricket Captain of Dharmaraja College,Kandy said that Sri Lanka Cricket had a concept to start ‘Gamata Cricket’ which was not happening practically and the relevant authorities should strive to develop cricket in the rural areas as there is an abundance of talent in the outstations

Siri Ranasinghe captained Dharmaraja College Cricket team in the year 1967 and his team mates were D.D.P.Alwis(Vice Captain) Nimal Yatigammana, Gamini Jayasundera to name a few. D.D.P. Alwis went on to play for Adastrians, while Nimal Yatigammana captained Dharmaraja Cricket team and scored a century in the ‘Big Match’ in later years. The other team mate, Gamini Jayasundera, joined the Sri Lanka Army and became a Major General and represented Defence Services.

The writer captained the Dharmaraja Cricket team in 1965 and led the side to victory in their Big Match against Kingswood. Stokily built Siri Ranasinghe is a Cricketer who scored a century in the ‘Big Match’ against Kingswood College in the year 1966 after twelve years. Before that Chandra de Silva of Dharmaraja College scored a century in the year 1954.

Siri Ranasinghe was a Senior Prefect of the School and a member of the School Soccer team which became District Champions at the Kandy District Schools Tournament in the year 1967.

He was the Vice Captain of the Central Province Schools Zonal Cricket team and after his school career he represented the Dharmaraja College Old Boys Cricket team at the Kandy District Cricket tournament for a number of years.

Later he represented Catamarans CC (Division II)and also the cricket team of the Building Materials Corporation, where he was employed as an Executive.

He is the son of Charitha Ranasinghe, Senior Lawyer in Kandy.
