Sasindu Avishka excels for St. Anthony’s

Ilandari Devage Sasindu Avishka Fernando

Fifteen-year-old Ilandari Devage Sasindu Avishka Fernando has brought honor and fame to his school St. Anthony’s College Wattala. Sasindu who hails from Kelaniya was born on 27th February 2006 and initially he was admitted to Wedamulla Maha Vidyalaya Thorana Junction Kelaniya in 2012 and the then Principal was Sunanda Kodikara. During this period there were no sports activities in this school but his forte is cricket.

From there he shifted to his preset school, St. Anthony’s College Wattala in 2017 and his parents Nandana Fernando of Postal Department and his mother Nayana Muditha admitted their son firstly to the school cricket academy and he came under Anuka de Silva and Mr. Lahiru. Same year Sasindu was selected to the under 13 Division Three team. He bats right hand and bowls right arm and opens the attack and he is a middle order bat and a safe fielder. In his first year itself he passed the 200 mark with two fifties and took 16 scalps. In his second year out of seven matches he got the opportunity to bat in only two innings and he got 50 runs and 7 wickets in the Division One Team.

In 2019 representing the under 13 Division One he scored 378 runs with an unbeaten 100 runs versus Kottawa Dharmapala with two fifties and claimed 28 wickets.

His coaches were Safraz Farook and Harshana Silva. He was well supported by Lasindu, Dasun Chanaka, Suren of Star Sports, lasith Malinga and Gihan. To enhance his cricket he joined the Oval Academy and came under Nrendon Kuruppu and Mr. Lasantha.

Representing the Oval Academy in the Nondscripts under 15 cricket tournament in 2021 he scored 149 runs at a healthy average of 49.7. He is well supported by the Principal Rev. Fr. Mal Fernando.
