Nimesha Bandara - talented athlete from Mahamaya, Kandy

Twenty-year-old Nimesha Bandara is an outstanding athlete of Mahamaya Girls’ School, Kandy having won the Best Athlete Award for three successive years.

She secured first place in the 80m and 100m races and 80m hurdles under the coaching of Asela Gunaratne of Galagedara Maha Vidyalaya.

In 2014 she won the 400m event at the District Sports Meet and came a close second in the 50m hurdles at the John Tarbat Athletics Meet.

Nimesha was also a member of the school’s relay team and secured first place in the 4x100m event at the Relay Carnival held at the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy.

In 2016, she came second in the 100m and 200m events at the Zonal Athletics Meet.

In 2017, she suffered a serious leg injury and was forced to rest for two years but came back to win the 100m and 200m events at the Inter-House Sports Meet and win the Under-20 Championship as well as the Overall Best Athlete of the Meet.
