Renowned cricket commentator Justice Suresh Chandra dies of heart attack

Renowned English cricket commentator and Supreme Court judge RKS Suresh Chandra died of a heart attack in Fiji yesterday at the age of 73.

Suresh Chandra was serving as a Judge of the Supreme Court in Fiji since his appointment in 2011 and as the Resident Judge of Appeals since 2012. At the time of his death with him was his second son Rasantha who had flown to Fiji a month ago on hearing of his father’s ill-health. Rasantha played cricket for DS Senanayake first eleven for three years since 1995 captaining the cricket team in 1996.

Suresh Chandra’s eldest son Kosala also played first eleven cricket for DS Senanayake College for four years since 1989 and was vice-captain in his final year 1992.

A product of Thurstan College, Suresh Chandra was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court in June 2010 and retired from that position in July 2012. Whilst serving as a SC Judge Suresh Chandra also involved himself as an English cricket commentator where his versatility on the sport was aired through the SLBC for many years when international teams toured the country.

He also served as a deputy representative of the United Nations. Suresh Chandra’s wife Savithri who was a senior teacher at S. Thomas’ College Prep Colpetty was involved with their junior cricket for a long period of time.

His younger brother Dinesh Rajaratnam, a Thurstanite and a cricketer of repute predeceased him. – ST
