National athlete and NOC secy Rajah Wickramasinghe dies at 83

Former national athlete and two-time secretary-general of the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOC) Wing Commander Rajah M Wickramasinghe has died at the age of 83 after prolonged illness.

As an athlete Wickramasinghe excelled in the throws winning the discus event in 1959 at the Nationals and finishing second in 1956, 1957 and 1962 and third in 1963 and 1967. He obtained third place in javelin and shot putt events in 1962 and 1964 respectively. Educated at Richmond College, Galle, Wickramasinghe later entered the University of Peradeniya graduated and joined the Sri Lanka Air Force where he continued his athletics career.

Wickramasinghe became secretary of the Amateur Athletic Association in 1970 and the same year managed the Sri Lanka team to the Asian Games in Bangkok.

He later became the secretary-general of the NOC from 1974-75 and again from 1978-79. In a Facebook tribute posted on April 9, NOC Sri Lanka says: “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing away of Wing Commander Raja M. Wickramasinghe (Retd. Sri Lanka Air Force) on March 27, 2020. “He was Secretary-General of the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka from 1974 to 1975 and from 1978 to 1979. “Wing Commander (Rtd) Wickramasinghe was a national athlete and a national champion in the discus. May his soul rest in peace.” – ST
