Abans Group led by W.B. Dhanushka bagged their first Mercantile Cricket title at the 10th Stafford Motor Co. Ltd., sponsored, 'Honda' Trophy / MCA 'G' division 25 –over League Tournament 2020/21, when they beat Pyramid Wilmer by 46 runs in the final, concluded on Saturday, 07th August at the MCA grounds.
Abans, who won the toss and batted, put up a challenging 201 for 8 in 25 overs riding on the solid opening stand of 65 runs in 60 balls, between O. Nimrode De Vesser (69 runs in 63 balls, inclusive of 08 fours) and Isuru Jayaranga (25 runs in 30 balls, inclusive of 2 fours).
Skipper, W.B. Dhanushka (25) and Dusham Hettiarachchi (38 not out with 04 sixes and 01 four) held the middle order batting against the containing spells of Pyramid Wilmer’s spinners, Umedha Madushan (05 for 30 in 05 overs) and Chandimal Chanaka (3 for 27 in 05 overs).
Pyramid Wilmer, despite a solid 70 runs stand in 53 balls for the 04th wicket between skipper, Lasith Fernando (47 in 34 balls, inclusive of 02 sixes and 04 fours) and Malith Peiris (25 in 29 balls with 01 four) caved in for 155 runs in 22 overs with the rest of batsmen falling like nine – pins, having no answer to Abans spinners Isuru Hashan (5 for 29 in 05 overs) and Dilan Sanjeewa 2 for 27 in 05 overs).
Match Referee, Manoj Perera had no hesitation of adjudging, Abans, opening batsman cum wicket keeper Nimrode De Vesser as the Man of the Match.
The other three special awards went to Sahan Tharanga Nanayakkara from Hayleys Group 'B' (best bowler), Dinuja Sandaru from Aitken Spence Group (best batsman ) and Dinesh Rangana Kaushalya from Abans Group (Man of the series).
The Awards were given away by Director / Chief Operating Officer, Charaka Perera (Chief Guest) GM, Damitha Jayasundera (Guest of Honor) (both from Stafford Motor Co. Ltd) and MCA Officials, Rohana Dissanayake, President , Sirosha Gunatillake, General Secretary and Tarindra Kaluperuma, Chairman, Tournament Committee.
