Sri Lanka Athletics (SLA) has decided to postpone the Junior National Championships for 2021 due to the present COVID-19 pandemic situation.
“The fresh dates will be informed in due course and SLA will give a minimum of six weeks preparation time for the athletes and coaches,” a senior official of SLA told the Daily News yesterday.
However, if there are any difficulties in conducting the Junior National Championships, a special selection competition will be held to select the athletes for the World Under-20 Championships in Kenya scheduled to be held from August 17 to 22.
Meanwhile, none of the athletes could reach the qualifying standards for the Tokyo Olympic Games during the National Championships, held last week.
However, Tharushi Karunaratne of Walala Ratnayake Central reached the qualifying standards for the World Under-20 Championships to be held in Nairobi.
She finished the Women’s 800m in second place with a time of 2.07.21s. So far, three athletes have reached qualifying standards for the World Under-20 Championships.
Apart from Karunaratne, Shanika Lakshani of Holy Cross College, Gampaha (800m) and Asian Youth Championship medallist Isuru Kaushalya (400m) have also reached the qualifying standards for the World Under-20 event.
