The Italy based Sri Lankan sprinter Yupun Abeykoon clocked a superb 10.09s in the Men’s 100m final at the Anhalt 2021 Track and Field Meet, held in Dessau, Germany on Friday.
Abeykoon, the Sri Lanka and South Asian record holder of the Men’s 100m event had achieved 10.15s at the Meeting di Savona, held in Italy on May 13, a week prior to his achievement in Germany.
This was the shortest time recorded by a Sri Lankan sprinter in this event.
However, Abeykoon’s new record time is yet to be ratified by World Athletics or Sri Lankan athletic officials.
His timing of 10.09s in Germany on Friday falls under the same category and is pending ratification.
According to a senior Sri Lanka Athletic (SLA) official, the sprint event is said to have a wind assistance of +2.2ms, which makes it a reason not to be considered as a new Sri Lanka record.
The wind speed at the stadium where the meet took place exceeded the legal limit.
The 26-year-old athlete from Pannala has already made steady progress in the 100m event to reach Olympic Qualification, which is 10.05s.
The SLA official further noted that with this latest development, Abeykoon has a good chance to qualify for the Tokyo Olympic Games.
