Liyanage makes winning start at Asian Chess Tourney

Sri Lanka Captain Ranindu Liyanage made a winning start to the Asian Continental Hybrid Chess Championship, when he beat Iranian Grandmaster Mosadeghpour Masoud convincingly.

Sri Lanka’s top four national champions Liyanage, Minul Doluweera, Susal de Silva and Denuwan Theekshana are participating in this event.

On the opening day of the event, Fide Master Doluweera of the University of Colombo managed to draw with Lou Yiping of China who has a higher ELO rating of 2,472.

Fifteen-year-old de Silva also drew with Sattarov Bobir of Uzbekistan who has a rating of 2,459 while Theekshana drew with Gholami Mahdi of Iran with a rating of 2,430.

However, all four Sri Lankan players were unable to win their games against opponents who are much higher in the rankings, on the second day of the event.

Sri Lankan top seed Liyanage lost to Grandmaster Nasanjargal of Mongolia (2,460) in a long battled game.

Doluweera also lost his game to Sttarov Bobir of Uzbekistan (2,459) while de Silva lost to International Master John Marvin of the Philippines (2,316).

Theekshana lost to International Master Taher Joseph of Indonesia (2,455).

Meanwhile, Mongolian International Master Gan-Erdene Sugar was able to take the lead by winning 2/2 rounds including against the top seed Iranian Grandmaster Maghsoodloo Parham.

There are nine other players who have tied with him with full points two out of two games on the second day.

The tournament has nine rounds according to Swiss System. US $16,000 will be awarded to the winners as cash prizes by the Asian Chess Federation.

Also the top seven players of the event will qualify to play in the FIDE World Chess Cup to be held in Russia in July, 2021. (D.R)
