Shammi Silva set to regain control of Sri Lanka Cricket

Shammi Silva-Mohan de Silva-Jayantha Dharmadasa

The former President Shammi Silva and his camp are set to regain control for another two-year term when Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) conducts their election on a virtual platform today.

The three main candidates contesting the SLC election have already announced their withdrawal from the election.

K. Mathivanan (President), Nishantha Ranatunga (Secretary) and Bandula Warnapura (Vice-President) decided to withdraw from the contest two days ago.

However, with the shadow parties of Shammi Silva contesting, the SLC election will be held without any interruption.

Apart from Shammi Silva, Mohan de Silva and Jayantha Dharmadasa have also submitted their nominations for the post of president.

Meanwhile, former Secretary Mohan de Silva together with Bandula Dissanayake and Nalin Aponso will contest for the post of Secretary.

Former treasurer Lasantha Wickramasinghe once again will contest for the same post while Sujeewa Godaliyadde from the shadow party will contest for the post of Treasurer.

Four candidates Ravin Wickramaratne, Jayantha Dharmadasa, Samantha Dodanwela and Nalin Aponso will contest for the two Vice-President posts.

Meanwhile, Krishantha Kapuwatte and Prasanna Gunasekara will contest for the post of Assistant Secretary while Sujeewa Godaliyadde and A. Kumara will contest for the post of Assistant Treasurer.

A former SLC official said: “We knew the Mathivanan camp would withdraw. We knew that from the very beginning of the election campaign. We have nothing to do with it.”

“But we have always said we were going to win this election pretty easily. It will be a one horse race and the Sport Ministry will conduct this election according to their plans that they had before the withdrawal of the rival camp.”

The three-member Cricket Election Committee comprising Justice Malani Gunaratne (Chairman), Justice Shiromi Perera (Member) and Dr. D. M. R. B. Dissanayake (Member) have already finalised the eligibility for casting votes for this election after considering objections.

Four provincial associations, six cricket associations , 22 district cricket associations, 28 controlling clubs and 22 affiliated clubs are eligible for casting vote (altogether 142 votes) for the election.

Following are the officials for SLC election:
