Kosala Amaratunga the rising chess star

Kosala Sandeepa Chamikara Dharmasri Amaratunga , is a rising chees star from Kalutara JMC College studying in grade nine who won the Championship of Sri Lanka Under-16 Online youth Rapid Chess Championship 2021. He is the son of Nishika Thushara Dharmasri Amaratunga and Keppetipola Nilamalage Nilma Manoji Prasangika of Kalutara. He is the elder brother of Piyumi Uthpala and Shivanthi Apsara. From grade1 to grade 6 he was not able do chess but he had the desire of playing chess in grade one but his school did not have chess at that time.In grade six namely August. 8 . 2018 the former manager of JMC Kalutara Eranda and coach Madushan Sameera They started doing chess and learn the beginners part within two days. His extraordinary talents were noticed by Madushan Sameera Dissanayaka the current chess coach of JMC Kalutara and Manager of Super Fighters chess academy .

Kosala Sandeepa is also a leading member of the Super Fighters Chess Club.SFCC is one of most active Chess Club in Kalutara District. SFCC Founded in 2017, mainly focused on developing and uplifting chess between the Kalutara district youngsters.The Super Fighters Chess Club led by Madushan Sameera Dissanayake has been able to produce young talents including Kosala.

Kosala came to competitive chess in 2018 and performed very well especially in 2020 and 2021.His first tournament was Kalutara district club level tournament , where he was ranked 21. After few years he won five out of nine in both National Blitz and Rapid which was held in 2020.

The performance of the tournaments gave him the chance to be Blitz and Rapid international rating after that tournament, he played the Sri lanka national Amateur chess championship 2020 that gave him a chance to get a Standard International rating.

Because of the covid19 pandemic tournaments stopped but the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka organised online youths event that would help the Sri Lankan Youth Chess Players .

Kosala led the Super Fighters Chess Club “C” Team of Chess Federation of Sri Lanka online team championship and won third place in Group “D”. After few months he played the Under-14 Youth Online rapid chess Championship and was selected to play Under-14 Asian Nations Cup online team event representing Sri Lanka.

Kosala was able to play the Under-14 Grand Prix 2021 and with his outstanding performance he was ranked 4th in Group “X” and increased his international rating by 66 .now kosala is one of highest international rated players in Kalutara district.

Since 2020 Kosala went on to train with more dedication and effort.Some days he would wake up around 2am and practice chess.The SFCC including his coach, was very supportive for his chess training. As a result, 14-year-old Kosala won the Sri Lanka online Youth Under-16 Chess Championship 2021.
