Cue sport dormant in Kandy

The sport of billiards and snooker over here in the hill capital of Kandy has taken a nosedive.

There are no tournaments unlike in the past when there were inter-club matches between Kandy clubs and also played against Colombo clubs.

In the early days, CYO - Catholic Club which was housed at the St. Sylvester’s College building, Lawn Club near the Kandy Market where the present library is housed, Public Service Club behind Policeground, Mahanuwara YMBA, Kandy YMMA both are neighbours above the Kandy Lake,Kandy Garden Club, Peradeniya Faculty Club, Kings Cue Club who earned a name through cue sport, took the game very seriously and the tournaments were a great attraction to many cueists. Today, the sport is dormant in most of the clubs and only played in parlours. Whatever said and done Mahanuwara YMBA and Public Services club switch on the lights and the game is played. The most looked forward to event was the Kandy District ‘Lanka Plate’ Billiards and Snooker championships, today it is not there. At one time Kandy was only next to Colombo in billiards and snooker, and provided national players and officials. Today sad to say the sport is in the dark. Some clubs don’t even switch on the lights of the table.

Kesara to upgrade sports in the city

The Mayor of Kandy Kesara Senanayake believes sport is a powerful tool for social change, and can be used to address a range of issues facing communities.

The Kandy Municipal Council is blessed with 24 playgrounds across the city, and many of them need to be upgraded as they have reached the end of their life spans. The Mayor has started to clean and upgrade the playgrounds, which is going to help sports lovers in a big way. The KMC also has 45 community centres where indoor sports are played.

These sporting venues not only help the very young, but also kids of older ages and teenagers and adults. The Mayor’s strategy for sport – Sport for All of Us – will support a long-term vision to make Kandy the most active and socially-integrated city. Today there are many schools and clubs without grounds. The only ground they had for matches the Bogambara Stadium was taken over by the Sports Ministry in the late 1990’s.
