All-rounder Maleesha Silva to lead St. Sylvester’s Cricket Team

All-rounder Maleesha Silva has been picked to lead St. Sylvester’s College, Kandy First XI Cricket Team this year. He is a left-hand top order batsman and a left-arm leg spinner.

He has represented Kandy and the Central Province School Teams. His Deputy is Sashika Basnayake a talented left-arm spinner who bats right-hand.

Once again the Head Coach is Roshan Jayatissa an ECB and ICC Level-2 qualified coach. The Assistant Coach and Junior Coaches are Hasitha Thilakasiri and Gayan Tharaka.

This time St. Sylvester’s are fielding a well balanced side with a formidable batting line-up and has a penetrative bowling attack.

This time they are in the Under-19 Division One Group ‘Z’ with schools like Dharmasoka College Ambalangoda, St. Servatius’ College Matara, Devapthiraja College Rathgama, St. Anthony’s College Wattala and Lumbini MV Colombo.

This year they played a friendly game against Trinity College few days back at the Asgiriya Stadium.

The Sylvestrians took up the game the hard way after it was founded in 1940, after 15 years made a modest beginning by introducing cricket to their sports calendar in 1955.

The first cricket team was coached by J. Denlow and Ronni Stephen and the side was led by T. Direckze.

M. E. Marikar became the first Sylvestrian to play representative cricket without playing for the school. Nihal Samarasekara was the first to play unofficial Test cricket and Ishak Sahabdeen played One Day Internationals for Sri Lanka.

This season the Sylvestrians will be led by Maleesha Silva, a left-hand batsman and a left-arm orthodox spin bowler, who represented Kandy and Central Province Team.

Sashika Basnayake is the Vice-Captain, left-arm spinner and right-hand bat and he too represented Kandy and the Central Province Teams.

In addition, Charith Rajaguru is an all-rounder and bats right-hand top order and a right-arm medium paceman.

The others in the squad are: Kasun Edirithilake, Malith Lakshan, Sadeepa Halangoda, Sathsara Navod, Nimsha Wijesingha, Kavishka Dilhara, Isuru Gunasekara, Razeel Rukshan, Sihina Bandara, Akila Wickramasinghe, Shannon Randeniya, Ashen Bandara, Dahami Welagedara, Mitchell Eric and Mevan Soyza.

Head Coach: Roshan Jayatissa, Assistant Coaches: Hasitha Thilakasiri and Gayan Tharaka. Master-in-Charge: Palinda de Silva and Prefect-of-Games: Thusitha Pallekumbura.
