Sanduni Nisansala does her school proud by excelling in three sports

Sri Lanka Junior National Taekwondo Player, Ruggerite and Athlete Thalagalage Sanduni Nisansala brought honour and glory to her motherland and her Alma Mater National School of Dehiowita.

Sanduni’s first school was Ranjan Wijeratne Maha Vidyalaya, Panawala, Eheliyagoda and the then Principal was Mr. Sugathapala and her first teacher was Mrs. Pushpa. After a short stint she entered Grade 3 of Buddhist Primary School, Dehiowita and subsequently she entered the National School Dehiowita from Grade 6 in 2012.

In the following year she attended rugger practices under Mr. Priyantha and got selected to the under 12 team and played in few friendly matches and later her school participated in the under 13 Sabaragamuwa Provincial Tournament and in the same year they won the All Island under 13 Plate Championship and again in the following year they were the under 14 Bowl Champions. In 2016 they were the Cup Runners Up and in 2017 they won the under 16 Plate Championship. In 2018 they were the All Island under 18 Bowl Runners Up and their “B” Team were the Bowl Runners Up. They participated in the Inter Province under 18 Championship and she was awarded school colours for Rugger and again they were the under 18 Plate Runners Up and Mrs. Patricia Fernando was the teacher in charge of rugger.

In the mean time she did Taekwondo under Mrs. Kalani Abegunawardene and the coach was Mr. Sampath. In 2015 taking part in the under 14 Heavy Inter School Taekwondo Championship she won a Bronze Medal and in 2017 she won a Gold in the Inter School Championship under 67 lbs and over and in 2018 she won a Bronze in the 73 lbs and over. Taking part in the All Island Sri Lanka Taekwondo Federation Tournament she won a Gold in the 68th lbs event. With these performances under her belt she got an opportunity to tour Thailand with the Sri Lanka Junior Taekwondo Team for the Tirak International Championship and she won a Gold Medal for her event and 24 countries participated. She was presented with a Prize from the Sabaragamuwa Province for representing their Province and winning a Gold in Thailand and also she was awarded school colours.

In the field of Athletics she started taking part in 2016 and in the under 15 age group she was the School Champion by winning Putt Shot, Javelin and Discus throw at the school inter house sports meet. She swept the board in 2017, 2018 and 2019 and she took part in the Divisional, Zonal and District and participated in the All Island Meet in 2018. In 2019 too she won in the District Level and her coach and Master in Charge of Athletics was . Neomal Ranaweeera. When she was selected for the tour of Thailand the Principal Rohana Gamage (snr), Deputy Principal Mr. Bandara the teachers and the students helped her in many ways. Her parents T. K. Priyankara and Mrs. Monika Shamali helped her all the time to achieve success.
