Former South African opening batsman Herschelle Gibbs, who was in Sri Lanka as the head coach of the Lanka Premier league team Colombo Kings, resigned on Saturday and immediately left to South Africa after three of his family members back home tested positive for Covid-19.
“The team owners informed us that Herschelle Gibbs had resigned as coach of Colombo Kings for personal reasons” said Colombo Kings skipper Angelo Mathews.
Gibbs’ Mother, brother and Sistor has been hospitalised after testing positive for Covid-19.
Herschelle Gibbs said “I had to come back home. I appreciate all the prayers and wishes of the people. Wish you guys strength and most importantly, good health in life,” concludes Gibbs.
Gibbs being a fantastic fielder himself, the Colombo Kings really lacked his fielding drills as head coach and lost the important semifinals to Galle Gladiators on Sunday night in the penultimate ball of the match, due to very poor fielding display, where Qais Ahamad was the guilty party dropping three easy catches.
