“Stern action to wipe out corruption from sports bodies”

Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa

The Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa said that he will take stern action to wipe out corruption that has crept into a number of sports bodies and develop the country’s sports.

The Sports Minister, himself a sportsman of repute will have the blessings of the President and Prime Minister in putting sports on the right track.

Namal Rajapaksa, who shone as a rugby football player for S Thomas’ College and later for Sri Lanka Navy, is a go-getter with a vision. Within a short time of accepting the Sports portfolio he has proven to be a personality who will not let obstacles get in his way. This has been proven by the ongoing Lanka Premier League. When many made excuses in a bid to have the tournament cancelled, young Rajapaksa put his foot down and saw that it went ahead as planned and it has been a success so far.

He has made wise moves towards developing the country’s sports sphere by involving the youth and is now on a mission to completely overhaul the Sports Law. This is something that is very much needed. A laudable move is his appointing an energetic Sports Council, with a mix of those who excelled in various sports along with business tycoons. Therefore, now, unlike in the past, there is a protocol to be followed in appointing the National Selectors and approving National squads. This Sports Council will study the process of selection and then only forward the selections with recommendations to the Sports Minister for his approval.

Namal Rajapaksa worked hard to obtain necessary approval for the LPL from the Health Ministry and other relevant departments and obtained the all important approval from the President and also the Prime Minister. He also had given few more suggestions to the Sri Lanka Cricket to fine tune the next year’s tournament which will make it more glamourous than the present one. He also played a key role in sending the National team to South Africa by getting the needed approval from the health authorities and ensuring the safety of the players and officials. He is also working hard to recommence sports in the country under strict compliance of Health Ministry guidelines.

Rajapaksa has a vision of developing sports and through sports to contribute immensely to boosting the country’s economy, as he believes that sports at international level will boost tourism and sponsorship and thereby boost the economy. His vision is to give due recognition to the sports bodies, enabling them to act independently and to support their plans in developing their sport without interference as he is determined to see all sports thrive and the country take its place in the top bracket of the sporting world map.

All sports bodies with a proper and viable plan for development of their respective subject will no doubt get the energetic Minister’s support to achieve their goals.
