Priyantha Weragoda was a top class spinner

Priyantha Weeragoda a product of Dhamraraja College Kandy and former Sri Lanka ‘A’ team and first-class cricketer, is widely regarded as a top spin bowler and outstanding batsman . He was an excellent left arm leg spinner who started playing cricket from under 11 and later played for under 13, 15, and 17 and turned out for the first XI from 1983 to 1987 and led the side in the 1986/87 season. In 1987 he was selected to lead the Central Province team and in the same year was in the Sri Lanka under 19 team.

He was the outstation schoolboy cricketer in 1987 and was also the best bowler that year. He started his cricket in 1980 and was under the guidance of famous coach late Arthur Alwis who realized his cricketing ability and guided him on the correct path to become a top cricketer. He was in the Sri Lanka under 17and 19 pool.

After leaving school at club level he played for Kandy CC, Kandy Youth CC, Sri Lanka Navy,Wattala Antonians, Central Province, and also played for Navaloka group in the mercantile tournament and won the best bowlers award. In P. Sara trophy tournament he has taken 875 wickets, and in their game against Negombo CC took 5 wickets for no runs with eleven maidens playing for Kandy CC (11 overs 11 maidens, five wickets no runs).

He was selected for national pool for the following tours, 1990 Zimbabwe, 1993 England, 1993 India, 1993 South Africa and 1994Australia. He has been in coaching from 1995 He started coaching his school Dharmaraja College in 1995 and was there till 2010 as head coach of under 13, 15, 17 and 19. Under his coaching players like Haresh Rathnayake under 17 in 1997, Buweneka Ekanayake under 19 in 2000, and Chamara Kapugedera under 19 in 2004 were selected for the Sri Lanka schools team.

He was also North Central Province spin bowling coach, and also worked in Badulla,Ampara district and is presently with Vavuniya district since 2014. He is an expert teaching how to deliver the spin yorker. A yorker is a difficult ball to negotiate and a spin bowler bowling a yorker is a rarity. He played for Sri Lanka ‘A’ and a lot of first-class club cricket as well. . He is currently a district coach attached to Sri Lanka Cricket with 20 years of coaching experience.
