The medal winning Lankan karatekas of Karate-Do Wado-Kai Club in New Zealand

The Auckland Karate-Do Wado-Kai Club affiliated to Karate New Zealand – the governing body for Karate in New Zealand is a club which comprises many Sri Lankans in New Zealand.

Altogether 24 Sri Lankan karatekas participated in the National Karate Tournament 2020 that was held recently at the Auckland Netball Centre and won six gold medals, 13 silver medals and 15 bronze medals. The club secured the fourth place overall and six of its karatekas were placed among “Best eight Players”. Over 250 karatekas representing 22 registered Karate Clubs from across New Zealand participated in the tournament.

The club has shown great improvement in recent times by participating in many competitions including the National Karate Championship (2 players), The National Secondary School Championship (4 players), the National Karate Cup - Development Event (12 players and Intermediate Event - 11 players).

The club is proud of its achievements and special mention should be made of those who were able to secure places in the National Karate Cup Development and Intermediate Events with only 15 months of training.

The karatekas are grateful to their parents and those who supported towards training and participation throughout the year.

Special thanks should go to Club coaches, Sensei Dhanusha, Sensei Saman, Sensei Kasun for their hard work, coaching and continuous presence throughout and organizing and taking care of students during the tournaments. Sensei Dhammika Ariyaratne is the Chief Instructor of Auckland Karate Do Wadokai, New Zealand.
