Gurukula Vidyalaya, Kelaniya is one of the leading educational institutions of Gampaha District and at the same time they are in the forefront in inter school cricket too mostly due to the untiring efforts of their cricket loving principal Anil Geethalal and former coach and Assistant Coach Lal Senaratne and the present coach Rithika Dinesh . Geethalal has appointed fourth year coloursman right arm off spinner, wicket keeper and middle order bat Kemira Nayanatharu Wijenayake as the captain for the year 2020/21 and his deputy will be Rashmika Mevan. Gurukula will be a strong outfit with nine of their last year’s players being in the team.
Kemira commenced his schooling at Parakrama Maha Vidyalaya, Bandarawatte, Gampaha in 2007 and Mr. Kariyawasam was at the Helm of the school. In the year 2009 participating in the inter house athletic meet he became the under 12 champion by winning 100, 400 metres and high jump events. As he was concentrating on cricket he gave up Athletics and attended cricket practices under Chanaka Manthreerathne and in his first year in the under 13 he passed the 300 run mark with two fifties and in the second year he scored nearly 400 runs with three half centuries and in the following year he kept away from cricket due to Grade Five Examination In 2013 he passed the 600 run mark with a century against Tholangamuwa Vidyalaya and another four fifties and in 2014 he joined Gurukula Vidyalaya and scored 896 runs with two centuries and seven fifties and in the same year they were promoted to the division one and he missed the magical thousand runs by four runs and scored three centuries and seven fifties.
In the following year which was his first year in under 15 he scored 475 runs with a century and three fifties and in the following year 324 runs and he was the Vice Captain of the Gampaha District and Western Province North Outer and he was in the forty member squad for the schools under 15 Malaysian Tour. In the first year of under 17 in 2017 he scored 421 runs with four fifties and in 2018 he captained the team and scored 471 runs with five fifties and his school came up to quarter finals.
His first year in the first eleven was in 2017 and as an under 15 player he scored 415 runs with three fifties and in the following year he collected 575 runs with six fifties and last year he scored 896 runs with three centuries and eight fifties and his school qualified for the schools under 19 limited over and for the two day tournament.
During this period he played in three big matches and three one dayers and in 2019 Big Match and Limited Over game he scored an unbeaten 90 and 98 respectively against their arch rivals Dharmaloka Vidyalaya, Kelaniya. This year these two events were postponed due to Covid 19.
