Despite Kandy being a good cricket loving city, it lacks high-level affordable cricket academies. At the grassroots level, the coaching centres have much to be desired and cricketers who make it at the highest level are well aware of that fact. As a result, many of them attempt to give back to the sport that has brought them fame by opening cricket academies, with the aim of nurturing the next generation of talent.
So, to provide an opportunity to improve cricketing skill of young talented cricketers, a cricket academy was established in Kandy called the Future Stars Cricket Academy in 2007 as a cricket facility for cricketers who are identified as having the potential to play cricket. They first had their sessions at Police Grounds and from 2015, they have their sessions at the Asgiriya Indoor Stadium and this academy is run by former top cricketers.
Senaka Dissanayake is the head coach, and he is being assisted by coaches like Sampath de Silva, Gamini Wasalanthanthiri, Chandra Thilak, Ijaz Nazar and Sandun Rathnayake. They give a big hand for the up and coming cricketers.
It is a well organized academy, one might have a different style of playing cricket but to nurture and improvise this talent, necessary guidance from experienced players is important. This base is provided by this academy where the focus is given to all age groups under a competitive environment to learn the basics of cricket.
The game itself brings out tremendous interest among schoolboys and club cricketers Cricket is an emotion that Kandy products have felt and loved every bit of it.
Kids dream to become cricket superstars from a very young age in Kandy due to the progress of cricket and the hype that is created among the fans. To make this dream come true for young superstars this cricket coaching centre gives a big hand. In this academy, children from 8 years to 18 years are trained.
