L.G.Amal Rasanga, an Old boy of St.Sylvester’s College,Kandy is an International Level one Gymnastic Coach who has produced over 1000 Medalists in the District, Provincial, National and International levels and his coaching of Gymnastics has spanned over 18 years.
Amal told this correspondent that the game of Gymnastics was not included in his sports career at School but he got interested in the game of Gymnastics after attending private classes under the coaching of the Veteran Gymnastic Coach, Vinesh Weeraratne. He got the hang of the game in no time and he won District and Provincial Meets in Gymnastics in the year 2002 and he was instrumental in coaching the students of his alma mater, St.Sylvesters’ College,Kandy and Amal Rasanga organized a Temporary Gym in his School meeting all expences by himself since he loved the game of Gymnastics.
Apart from his School, he started coaching Mahamaya Girls School, Girls High School, Kandy and the Central province Gymnastic Team for the last 14 years. He has followed many National and International Gymnastic Coaching Courses including an International Coaching Course in Hong kong in the year 2016 to improve his knowledge of the game. Among the outstanding Gymnasts who won Junior Nationals were Renuka Navaratne,Akarsha Perera, Ramitha Perera, and Vishwa Chaturanga. Ravindu Shehan won Sri Lanka School colours for four consecutive years. Amal coached his School Gymnastic team to become All Island Schools Champions in the year 2018
for the first time as for the last 29 years Ananda College and Royal College, Colombo has won this Championship. He accompanied the Sri Lanka Boys Team for the Asian Gymnastic Championship held in Indonesia in the year 2017. Amal Rasanga said that as there is no Gymnasium for Gymnastics in Kandy area, it is difficult to improve the sport and has requested the Sports Minister for a fully equipped Gym in Kandy for the Gymanstic loving children in this area.
