National Sports Festival in December

The most important sports event of the calendar National Sport Festival is going to be held as usual and once again Provincial sports Directors have decided to conduct this big event after the successful meeting held at the Sports Ministry last week . Due to the Covid 19 pandemic there was a likelyhood of postponing this event but all the provincial sports directors pointed out there is enough time until 31st December to finish this event and no need to postpone it.

The Director General of Sports Amal Edirisuriya and Sport Director I.P Wijeratne were associated with provincial sports directors for a final decision on the 46th National Sports Festival.

However they all agreed to call applications via online for the final stage of the National Sports Festival for the first time in this festivals history. National sports Festival is conducted by Sports Ministry as an annual event and most of the National athletes are expected to take part in this event. All the provincial directors have pointed out the importance of this sports festival and there are no issues about the duration as there is enough time until end of the year.

However they are planning to finish divisional secretariat and inter district competitions by end of October .Athletics is the key event of this sports festival while most of the team games Badminton, Table Tennis, Kabbadi, Volleyball , Basketball, Football, soft ball Cricket, Boxing, Gymnastics, Taekwondo, Judo, Karate, swimming have also been included for this major sport festival and the competitions of the divisional secretariat, district and provincial level to be conducted by the Sports Ministry.

Meanwhile due to Covid 19 epidemic all the competitions are organised under the Health Ministry regulations and this is the main reason to call athletes applications via online basis.

The Sports Ministry Secretary K.D.S Ruwanchandra said that there was a possibility of postponing this Sports Festival earlier with this unexpected Global viral situation but sports directors of the respective Provinces requested to conduct this event with their commitment to organise it under the health regulations with regard to Covid 19 viral epidemic.

Meanwhile Sri Lanka Athletic Association already decided to conduct the 98th National Athletic championship on 4-5 December at Colombo and National athletic selection trials will be held on 23, 24, 25 th October at the Sugathadasa Stadium. This time selection trial is very important for athletes to qualify for the Nationals.

The organisers have decided to limit the athletes for the National championship National athletic Association has already made arrangements to conduct the National pool training for the selected athletes who won medals during the last South Asian Games. Athletes have a very busy schedule with many Asian level competitions scheduled to be held in 2021.
