Vipuli steals the limelight on day six of SSC Open Badminton

Former national shuttler Vipuli Abeysekera came to the limelight yesterday when she became the women’s over 40 champion at the SSC Open Badminton championships which is now in progress at the SSC Indoor Stadium and Mercantile courts.

The final of the over 40 women’s singles between Vipuli Abeysekera and Priyanka Abeyratna both former national shuttlers provided a thrilling finish with Vipuli using her experience to win the title 21/19, 21/10.

In the semi-finals of the women’s over 40 Vipuli beat Thushari Brahamanage 21/4, 21/5 and Priyanka defeated bottom seed Wijayalakshmi Punchihewa 21/18, 21/15.

Meanwhile Yeheni Kuruppu partnered with Aishwarya Ravichandran entered the women’s doubles quarterfinal when they beat Mihansa Dinayadura and Sammoda Fernando 21/5, 21/4 while Ilmee Waranga and Oshadee Karunaratna beat Shivanthi Siriwardena and Bashini de Silva.

Top seeded pair Achini Ratnasiri received a walkover to enter the quarterfinal of the women’s doubles while Chamya Nandasiri and Yasmitha Wedamulla the bottom seed pair also received a walkover to enter the quarterfinals

The quarterfinals of the women’s singles saw all the seeded players entering the quarterfinals without much effort. Top seed Dilmi Dias defeated Wasana Egodage 21/6, 21/10 while former national champion Chandrika de Silva advanced to the quarterfinal when she beat Raveeshiya Jayaweera 21/4, 21/16. Hasara Wijayaratna, the bottom seed scored an easy two sets 21/4, 21/9 win over Shivanthi Siriwardena to enter the quarterfinals.

Today the seventh day of the tournament will see most of the junior and senior quarterfinals being worked off at both venues. The finals will be held on Sunday January 27.
