The first ever cricket awards, orgnasied by the Matale Distirct Cricket Association (MDCA) was held at the Mahthma Gandhi Memorial Hall in Matale, where young school and club cricketers, who performed well in the 2016/17 years were honored. The main aim of the organizers was to encourage cricketers to better themselves in the game.
A four-member selection committee was nominated by Matale District Cricket Association to select individual performers in batting, bowling and fielding at school level in their respective age categories. The committee comprised people like Sunil Fermando (provincial cricket coach) who was the head, Ananda Kumara, Kavinda Bowatta and Matale district coach Priyantha Weragoda.
A big hand should go to the orgnisers, Upali Sirisena, President MDCA in association with Charaka Udupihilla (Secretary) under the guidance of its patron Sujeewa Godaliyadda. The event was graced by Mohan de Silva, former Vice President, Sri Lanka Cricket as the chief guest. Two Sri Lanka crickerters Lahiru Madushanka and Prabath Jayasooriya were the special guests.
