Pathum Poorna, aims high in wushu

Fifteen-year-old Pathum Poorna Vancuylenberg of Prince of Wales’ College, Moratuwa has been selected to represent Sri Lanka in the 9th Asian Wushu Championship - 2017 from September 14 to 21 in South Korea. He will compete in Under 15 age category.

Following his father’s foot steps he commenced his wushu carrier in 2010 under Elvis Vancuylenberg and in the same year he became the Sri Lanka Schools All-Round Champion in Under 13 age category by clinching two gold medals and in 2011 in the same age group he carried away the same championship and received two golds. In 2011 too he won the same championship to complete three years in succession. In 2011 he represented Sri Lanka Junior Team for the World Champions Games in Ankara, Turkey and in 2012 he represented Sri Lanka in under 13 category at the 5th World Traditional Wushu Championship held in Huazgshan in China where he won a silver medal.

He won three gold medals in National Junior Wushu Championship held in Ambepussa and got selected to represent Sri Lanka Junior Team for the Asian Junior Wushu Championship 2013 in China.

In 2015 in the under 15 category after winning three golds in the Wushu All Island Championship held in Sugathadasa Stadium he was adjudge the Most Outstanding Player of the Under 15 age category.

In 2016 He was selected to represent Sri Lanka Junior Wushu Team at the sixth World Junior Wushu Championship held in Burgess, Bulgaria.

His father Elvis Nishantha Vancuylenberg too represented Sri Lanka and at present he is the coach at Prince of Wales’ College and the Principal Kusala J. Fernando is extending his fullest support to Pathum to continue Wushu at school.
