
Nilani Ratnayake who won the 3000m steeplechase was adjudged most outstanding female athlete, while 100m sprinter Himasha Eashan was adjudged best male athlete at the 57th Army Athletics Championship which concluded at Sugathadasa Stadium on Friday .
The South Asian gold medallist Himasha Eshan was the fastest athlete of this meet when he finished first in the 100m with 10.29 seconds while Nilani Ratnayake, whose steeplechase feat was adjudged the most outstanding performance in the female category won her third individual gold medal when she clocked 4:25.20 seconds to finish the 1,500 metres and and also won the 5000 metres with another superb performance.
On the final day, Amasha de Silva broke Susanthika Jayasinghe’s 27-year old Army meet record clocking 11.67 seconds to win the 100 metres final.Amasha also won the women’s 200m with a personal best and new meet record of 24.05 seconds. Harsha Karunaratne won the 800m clocking 1:51.06 seconds, while Dilshi Kumarasinghe returned to the 800m after six months to win it with ease clocking 2:06.73 secs.
Meanwhile Roshan Ranatunga who won the high jump earlier, returned to his pet event the 110m hurdles, where he set a new meet record of 13.91 seconds to win the event, while Samith Fernando won the Shot Putt with a new meet record of 16.60m. Sarangi Silva won her pet event, the Long Jump, with a new meet record of 6.14m.
Sachini Perera who set a new Sri Lanka record in the pole vault received a special cash award.
The five-day competition saw one Sri Lanka record, three Army records and 14 Meet records tumbling.
Sri Lanka Artillery clinched the championship trophy as the overall winners while 2nd and 3rd places were won by athletes in Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and Sri Lanka Army Service Corps respectively.
The final day’s Chief Guest Army Commander Lt. Gen. Shavendra Silva expressed his happiness over Army Athletic achievements and congratulated each of the winners and distributed trophies and medals to them.
Inter Regiment challenge trophy for field events for women was’ won by Sri Lanka Army Women’s Crop ‘ A ‘while field events for men was won by Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Regiment.
The inte-regiment Challenge trophy for track events for men was won by Sri Lanka Artillery.
The Inter regiment challenge trophy for relays for men won by Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Regiment while relays women’s trophy was won by Sri Lanka Army Women’s Crop’A’.
Sri Lanka Army Women’s Crop’ A’ was declared champions of Inter Regiment women’s while the men’s challenge trophy won by Sri Lanka Artillery Regiment.
