
Oshini Gunawardena produced a fine performance to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Online FIDE World Youth Chess Tournament, which began yesterday.
Gunawardena started with a draw in the first game and fought back to win the second game against Anastasia Chichinadze of Georgia in the pre quarter-finals.
The national champion Ranindu Liyanage also reached the quarter-finals with a historic win over Henerson De La Fuenle of Spain.
Meanwhile, 15-year-old Susal de Silva lost both his games against the International Master Christopher WooJin Yoo of the US.
Gunawardena will meet Ksenia Asachekno of Russia while Liyanage will face Nikolaos Spyropoulos of Greece in the quarter-finals.
