Maldives to host SAFF Football Tourney

Maldives received the nod over Nepal to host the SAFF Football Championship after a final discussion held yesterday.

The new dates for the tournament will be from October 1 to 13 at the Male Stadium in Maldives.

This tournament was postponed for almost a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and now it has been finally offered to the Maldives.

Hosts Maldives, Sri Lanka, India, Nepal and Bangladesh have confirmed their participation while Bhutan have requested a further time period to confirm their status.

Pakistan are serving a suspension by the world governing body FIFA and is expelled from this year’s tournament.

Maldives defeated India 2-1 in the final when the tournament was held in Bangladesh in 2018.

Sri Lanka's best performance in this event was way back in 1995 when they edged out India 1-0 in the final played in Colombo. (AN)
