The third phase of the inaugural Super League semi-professional football tournament conducted by Football Sri Lanka (FSL) and scheduled to start on August 17 is set to be postponed to November due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The second stage of the tournament was scheduled to start on August 17 and continue until November 30 at the Racecourse Grounds in Reid Avenue.

However, following directions from the Sports Ministry and the Health Ministry, the tournament was put off and is expected to recommence in November after the SAFF Championship in the Maldives.

“The safety of the players is an important factor for us. With the current pandemic situation, which has shown a sudden spike, we are compelled to act vigilantly.”

“As a responsible organisation we have to follow the government’s request to stay safe and reduce activities unless it is very important,” lamented Jaswar Umar, President of FSL. (A.N.)
