Sri Lanka’s FIDE Master Susal de Silva came out with a fine performance to advance to the next round of the Asian Zonal Hybrid Chess Championships, which continued yesterday.
De Silva outplayed the Bangladesh International Master Mohammad Minhaz Uddin in grand style to score a point and collected 4.5 points to stay in fourth place after the sixth-round.
He is also the leading Sri Lankan player currently out of the three competitors. De Silva is set to meet the Grandmaster Enamul Hussain in the seventh-round.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s Buddihka Amarasinghe also had an excellent game as he beat his high-ranked Bangladesh opponent FIDE Master Ahmed Shike Nazir in the sixth-round. With this victory, Amarasinghe has obtained a total of four points out of six games.
However, the national champion Ranindu Liyanage couldn’t win his game against the Bangladesh Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman in the sixth-round.
Liyanage made a superb effort with the match lasting for nearly five and half hours but finally, Rahman won the game to collect one point.
Rahman lead with 5.5 points while the other Grandmaster from Bangladesh Enamul Hussain and Mehdi Hasan Parag also from Bangladesh are in the second position with five points out of six games.
After the sixth-round out of nine rounds, de Silva is in fourth place while Liyanage and Amarasinghe are in the next batch with four points each along with four Bangladeshi players.
The Asian Zonal Chess Championship is a preliminary event for the FIDE World Chess Cup 2021.
A total of 39 players from Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Maldives and Sri Lanka are participating in this event.
