Player-contract dispute over England tour settled

Sri Lanka cricketers came to an amicable settlement over the player-contract issue

The Sri Lanka cricketers and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) finally, came to an amicable settlement over the player-contract issue ahead of the England tour following a decisive meeting held at the Taj Samudra Hotel in Colombo yesterday.

Few days back, 38 players refused to sign their annual player-contracts citing non-transparency and it was not favorable for them.

However, with the interference of SLC Ex-co and other officials in the afternoon they reached a compromise to sign the agreement to make the England tour a reality.

Therefore, the players agreed to travel to English even without a payment and to resolve the issue after their return.

“The meeting got heated and the players were threatened that they will be suspended for three years if they don’t sign the contract,” a reliable source close to the players confirmed to the Daily News yesterday.

“The players had refused to sign the contract and they were asked to vacate the hotel as well in the morning,” the source said further.

“But later in the day, they gave time till evening to reach an agreement which they subsequently agreed only for the England tour,” the source added.

According to SLC sources, the agreement will be effective only for the England tour and after completion the players are scheduled to meet SLC officials for a further discussion to finalise their annual player-contracts.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Cricket Team will leave for England today, for a limited overs series, which includes three T20 Internationals and three One Day Internationals commencing from June 23.
