Senaka Dissanayake is a talented cricketer and a cricket coach who started his cricket career while representing Dharmaraja College.
He scored a fine double-century at the Asgiriya Stadium in Kandy while putting his experience into practice and currently he is running his own cricket academy at Kandy Police Grounds.
Dissanayake scored a double-century in the annual Big Match between Kingswood and Dharmaraja in 1984.
He captained the Under-17 Cricket Team of Dharmaraja in 1971 and went from strength to strength before representing the First XI Team from 1982 to 1984.
Apart from the double-century, he scored 198 against Nalanda College and 119 against Zahira College, Colombo, 100 against St. Thomas’ College, Matale and 105 against S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia.
At this high point of his cricket career, Dissanayake was selected for the
Under-19 National Team that toured Australia in 1984 led by Aravinda de Silva.
That team included Marlon von Haught, Asanka Gurusingha, Roshan Mahanama, Don Arunasiri, Gamini Wickremasinghe, Kapila Dandeniya and the late Sujeewa Kamalasuriya.
In Australia, Dissanayake opened the batting in all three Youth Test matches and one dayers and his highest score was 56 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
In addition, he was involved in a 121-run stand with Aravinda de Silva who went on to make 142 runs.
Later, Dissanayake played club cricket and he had a 10-year stint with Kandy CC and scored 149 against Ambalangoda Rio CC, 107 not out against NCC, 102 against Moors SC and 116 against Sebastianites CC.
He represented Central Province and he toured
Australia in 1995 and represented Chirnside Park Cricket Club for seven seasons as a player cum coach.
He also had the opportunity to complete his
Level-2 Coaching Course in Australia after obtaining his Level-I in Sri Lanka as a schoolboy.
He coached Dharmaraja for two seasons before he left to Australia. In 2002, he returned to Sri Lanka and coached the Dharmaraja First XI Team for 15.
During this period he produced a number of outstanding cricketers and at present he is the Head Coach of Vidyartha College while running his academy ‘Future Stars’ for over 10 years.
