19 year old, Yasith Alahakoon, a Grade 13 student of Dharmaraja College, Kandy is an outstanding Karateka who started practicing Karate under the coaching of Saman Weerasinghe, veteran Karate Coach in the year 2013. The five feet eight inches tall Yasith participated in the Under 15 age category Karate Competition in Kumite for the first time in the year 2016 organized by the International Karate Association and became Champion in the 47 Kg. weight class.
In the same year he secured second place at the ‘Kurodaiya’ Karate Championship held at the Gymnasium of the Peradeniya Campus. In the following year in 2017 he won the First place at the Karate Championship in the under 15 age category, held at the Gymnasium of Peradeniya Campus in 69 Kg. weight class. He was placed second at the Kandy District Karate Championship organized by the Central Province Karate Association and Karate Do Federation respectively in the Under 15 age group.
On 23rd of March, 2017 Yasith became Black Belt Dan I and in the year 2018 he was selected to the National Pool in Karate and he secured second place in Kumite and Third place in Kata at the Karate Championship in the Under 19 age group and this championship was held at Gandhi Hall, Matale. In the year 2019 he got the Second place in Kumite held at the same place, Gandhi Hall, Matale and in the same year became first at the Karate Do Federation District Competition held at the Kandy Municipal Sports Centre and at the Central Province Karate Meet he secured the second place.
In the year 2019 at the South Asian Karate Championship held at Dhaka, Bangaladesh he secured the second place in the 76 Kg. Weight class. He is doing his G.C.E. (Advanced Level) in the IT stream and his ambition is to become a Soft-Ware Engineer while continuing Karate.
Yasith is thankful to his coach and the Principal of Dharmaraja and his father for the encouragement given to him to improve the game of karate.
