Newly elected President of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Shammi Silva said that he has a long term plan to boost the financial structure of SLC despite the deadly COVID-19 pandemic.

“Actually, the COVID-19 pandemic has devastated all Test playing nations and they have lost all their sources of income,” he lamented. “But we were able to conduct the Lanka Premier League T20 Tournament successfully and obtained a profit of more than Rs. 100m for Sri Lanka Cricket,” Silva explained.

“We have already discussed with the other Test playing countries and are negotiating ways of finding more income to SLC,” he elaborated. “We are planning to host more international matches during the next two

years in a similar manner in which we conducted the England series last year,” Silva commented.

“The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had initially agreed to play only three matches in Colombo but we were able to negotiate and increase the number of games to six,” he stated.

“This is another way of increasing our source of income and we will continue to pursue all top Test playing nations to play more international games in Sri Lanka,” he revealed.

“We would benefit only if we are able to host more international games in Sri Lanka. We would earn Rs. 10m if we host three games and we can double that income by increasing the matches to six,” he explained.

“Likewise, if we can host more international teams then we are assured of more income in the next two years,” added SLC President.

Silva also noted that the second edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) will be conducted this year with the participation of more international players. “We have already made necessary arrangements to conduct the second edition of the LPL,” he disclosed.

“Last occasion we were able to obtain a profit of over Rs. 100m and this time also we are hoping to make even a much higher profit from this event.” Silva also said that he would, with his team of office-bearers, expose the people behind all the bad publicity they have received running up to the election.

“We want to erase the bad name of SLC given by certain people because it is an image recognised worldwide. We have been accused of being corrupt, not performing well etc.”

“Even at the COPE meetings, most of the news that came out was misreported. 99 percent of the events that took place didn’t happen during our time.”

“Give us another one week and we will come out with all the details.. Then you can see who the people are behind this mudslinging campaign of SLC,” he added.
