Dhammika Harischandra the record breaking weightlifter

M.M.Dhammika Harischandra was a former Sri Lanka Air Force leading woman weightlifter who has established 19 Sri Lanka Records at different weightlifting contests. At the National Weightlifting contest in the Year 2009, she established Two Sri Lanka Records in Snatch 71 Kg.,Clean and Jerk 81 Kg. and a total of 152 Kgs. In the year 2014 at the National Weight lifting Contest held at the Welagedara Stadium, Kurunegala she established three Sri Lanka Records and at the 38th National Sports Festival she established one Sri Lanka Record.

In the First South Asian Games in Nepal she established two Sri lanka records in Clean & Jerk 88 Kg. and a total of 158 Kgs. At the Defence Services Meet held in 2012 she established three Sri lanka Records and at

the 2012/2013 Nationals established three Sri lanka Records. At the 40th National Games she established a Sri Lanka Record and in the year 2014 again established two SriLlanka records in Clean & Jerk 97 Kg. and a total lift of 172 Kgs.

At the Commonwealth Games Trials Dhammika Harsichandra established a Sri Lanka Record of lifting 98 Kg. in Clean & Jerk and she has won the National title in her weight class for the 14th consecutive year. She is an old girl of Hurikaduwa Maha Vidyalaya and in school she has been involved in many sports activities like Athletics, Netball, Volleyball, Baseball and Cricket.

Dhammika started weightlifting in the year 2003 at the Kandy YMCA under the coaching of Athula Wijewickrema, former National Coach in Weight lifting. She was the first Runner-up at the National Weightlifting Contest in the year 2015 and in 2016 secured the third place at the National Weightlifting Contest. first place at the Sri Lanka Novices Power-lifting contest in the same year. At the Shakthi Powerlifting Championship in the year 2016 she established three new Sri Lanka Records at the National Weightlifting contest in 2017. She is thankful to her Coach, Athula Wijewicrema for the encouragement given to her with regard to her improvement in weight lifting. Her intention is to do well in weight lifting in International Contests and bring fame to her country as long as she is able to do so.
