This ceremony was held under the patronage of Sport Minister Namal Rajapaksa at the Dadalla Volleyball Indoor Stadium on Friday.

Sport Ministry Director General Amal Edirisooriya and the SLVF Secretary A. S. Nalaka signed this contract in the presence of several other officials. Sports Minister Rajapaksa believed that the national sport could reach new heights with the signing of this new agreement between the two parties. With this new agreement, the Sports Development Department donated over Rs. 40m for the development of both indoor volleyball and beach volleyball.

“We believe that volleyball has a good chance to reach World Rankings with this financial assistance,” Sport Minister Rajapaksa told the Daily News yesterday.

“Especially after this global COVID-19 pandemic, we have an idea to host an international volleyball tournament in Sri Lanka,” he stressed.

“This tournament will provide more international exposure to the national volleyball players to build up their skills,” he said.

“The Volleyball Federation has a fully accomplished indoor stadium at Galle and it is good for the sport, not only for infrastructure facilities but also for match practices,” he elaborated

“The National Sports Council, Headed by Mahela Jayawardene and the High Performance Committee have already recommended five sports, which are capable of achieving international victories,” the Minister added.

Tennis, karate, aquatic sports (swimming) and rifle shooting are the other sports associations, which would receive financial assistance through this agreement in the future. (D.R)
