Samanga Kumarasinghe - a talented Sri Lankan weightlifter

Thirty-one-year-old Samanga Kumarasinghe, an old girl of Tangalle Balika Vidyalaya is a talented weightlifter, attached to the Sri Lanka Navy and a final year external student of the University of Ruhuna.

Samanga started training weightlifting in 2010 under the Coaching of R. E. Wickremasinghe, a veteran coach. Her first meet was held at the YMCA Hall, Kandy.

She secured third place at this meet by contesting in the 69kg weight class event. She lifted 45kg in snatch, 60kg in clean and jerk and the full total was 105kg.

In her second meet she increased her performances at the National Weightlifting Contest held at the Kelaniya Campus to win a Silver Medal securing second place in the weight class of 69kg and she lifted 55kg in snatch and 65kg in clean and jerk and lifted a full total of 120kg.

In 2014, she went up on the ladder of success to win a title in the 69kg weight class establishing two Sri Lanka records by lifting 70kg in snatch and 81kg in clean and jerk and her full total was 157kg.

In 2015, she continued to win medals but this time she had to be satisfied with second place in the weight class of 69kg at the National Sports Festival held at the Torrington Square Weightlifting Centre. In 2016, at the National Sports Festival, she won second place in the 69kg weight class lifting a full total of 151kg (snatch 70kg and clean and jerk 81kg).

In 2017, at the National Sports Festival held at Polonnaruwa National Stadium she won a Gold Medal in her weight class.

From 2018 to date she is coached by Athula Wijewickrema of YMCA, Kandy, an experienced weightlifting Coach.

In 2018 and 2019 she won a Silver Medal and a Gold Medal at the National Sports Festival and the National Championship in a changed weight class of 76kg and 71kg. She participated at the Egat-Kings Cup Tournament in Thailand in 2013 in the 69kg weight class and was placed sixth.

In 2015 when she participated at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Contest held at Pune, India she was placed fourth in the 69kg weight class event.
