Pushpakumara and Dissanayake to contest Hockey AGM

SSP Kamal Pushpakumara and Matale District MP Rohana Dissanayake will battle for the post of President at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Sri Lanka Hockey Federation (SLHF) on May 31.

This is the first time that Pushpakumara is contesting for the election.

“I understand that the past practice was to carry out its activities periodically supported by occasional grants/concessions by the Ministry of Sports, international bodies and well-wishers,” he said.

“I recognise these resources alone cannot sustain its activities if it is to achieve its vision, unless with the assistance of an official sponsor.”

“I have no doubt, Namal Rajapaksa, Minister of Sports, will give his blessings and generous assistance to take this game to international level,” he added. Meanwhile, former President of SLHF Dissanayake said that his idea is to construct more turf pitches to improve the standards of the game.

Dissanayake’s opinion is that hockey should be professionalised like other sports such as rugby, football and cricket.

“Today, most of the associations are inactive and they are only paper associations and we should change this system.”

“I think the present Sports Minister has a good vision to develop the game and I am always prepared to give my best effort to develop this game together.”

Meanwhile, the incumbent President of the SLHF P. Vishwanathan will contest for the post of secretary along with Thilina Karunaratne, R. Maheswaran and T. B Basnayake.
