Bangladesh wins first ODI by 33 runs after Hasaranga scare

Sri Lanka players celebrate a dismissal

Bangladesh managed to eke out a 33-run victory after Wanindu Hasaranga threatened to single handedly win it for Sri Lanka in the first One-Day International (ODI) of the three-match series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka on Sunday.

Hasaranga made 74 off 60 balls in a brilliant counterattacking innings to give the visitors hope of pulling off an unlikely winbut in the end his efforts ended in vain as Sri Lanka got bundled out for 224 in 48.1 overs.

Mehidy Hasan was the pick of the Bangladesh bowlers, finishing with four for 30 while Mustafizur Rahman took three for 34.

Earlier, Mushfiqur Rahim struck 84 off 87 balls while Mahmudullah Riyad and Skipper Tamim Iqbal made 54 and 52 respectively to take the hosts to a decent total of 257 for six in their 50 overs.

Bangladesh seemed to have the match in the bag when four strikes from Mehidy along with one wicket a-piece from Shakib Al Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman reduced the visitors to 102 for six inside 28 overs.

But Hasaranga was not ready to give up, as he began his innings with a thumping four and continued with the same attitude for the rest of his knock.

Hasaranga first formed a 47-run stand with Dasun Shanaka (14) and then added 62 runs off 59 balls for the eighth-wicket with Isuru Udana (21).

Hasaranga struck three fours and five towering sixes in his resilient innings and took Sri Lanka to 211 for seven, needing 47 runs off 37 deliveries.

Hasaranga got one life in the 41st over, when Liton Das failed to latch onto a difficult chance at mid-wicket off Shakib but the all-rounder couldn’t make it count in the end.

Hasaranga attempted to pull Mohammad Saifuddin in the final ball of the 44th over for his sixth six in the innings but ended up giving a simple catch to Afif Hossain.

Udana then departed in the very next ball and then it became a matter of time before Bangladesh sealed the win.

With this victory, Bangladesh ended its 10-match winless streak and also earned 10 points in the ICC World Cup Super League.

In the first innings, brothers-in-law Mushfiq and Mahmudullah rescued the Bangladesh innings after a slump in the middle to take the Tigers to a respectable total after the hosts opted to bat first. (Agencies)
