Sri Lanka Youth Volleyball Player, All Island Best womens schools player 2016 and 2017, All Island DSI under 19 Best Attacker, in 2017 and Rupavahini Best Attacker 2017, member of the Pubudu Sports Club Tangalle and athlete Hewagamage Shakira Lakshani brought honour and glory to her Alma Mater Vijayaba Vidyalaya Hungama, Tangalle Pubudu Sports Club Tangalle Sri Lanka Navy and her motherland.
Shakira commenced her schooling from Melpeththawa Maha Vidyalaya Ambalantota, Tangalle in 2009 when Rathnayake was at the helm of the school and her first class teacher was Mrs. Premakanthi and she was in Grade Four she took park in the Inter House Athletic Sports Meet of her school and came first in 50, 100 metres and in Long Jump and she was selected for the Divisional Meet and in the following year too she repeated the same performances.
She was admitted to the Grade Six of Vijayaba Vidyalaya of Hungama and as she showed an interest in volleyball her parents Hewagamaga Jagath Kumara and Ramya Niroshani encouraged their daughter to take up to volleyball and she came under the school coach and prefect of games Tharaka Ratnaweera. In the mean time she participated in the Inter House Sports Meet in 2015 and she won 100 and 200 metres and took part in the Divisional and Zonal Meets and she swept the board.
Her school volleyball team won the Divisional, Zonal, District and Provincial levels and in 2016 their under 17 school team were the runners up in All Island Girls Tournament and in the DSI Super League Tournament they came third and with these performances Shakira was selected for the Sri Lanka Youth under 17 Girls Tour of Thailand in 2016 and 16 countries participated and the Sri Lanka Youth Team was placed eighth but any how it was a fine exposure for Shakira.
When she returned home she was felicitated by the Southern Province Sports Association and awarded colours. In 2017 they won all the lower level tournaments and in the under 19 All Island Tournament they won the Trophy and she became the Best Player in the country and in the DSI Under 19 Tournament they were the runners up and she was adjudged the Best Attacker and in the Rupavahini Open Tournament she represented the Pubudu Sports Club and became the Best Attacker In the following year in the under 20 age group Pubudu Sports Club became third in the Open Tournament and in the same year at the under 20 All Island Tournament they were the champions. With all these performances under her belt she was selected for a pool of 28 players for the Asian Tour.
In 2019 playing for Sri Lanka Navy in the Munchee Tournament they beat the Army but lost to the Air Force in the Rupavahini All Island Tournament. She was the Best Girls Volleyball Player in 2016 and 2017 and won colours and the Awards Ceremony was held at BMICH Colombo.
