A scintillating display of goal-keeping by custodian Mohamed Murshid enabled Ratnam SC to hold Red Star SC to a nil-all draw in their Super League Football Tournament encounter played at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo yesterday.
Playing his second match of the tournament, the 19-year-old manned his goal area to perfection, making valiant efforts to prevent his team from defeat.
After holding one of the strong contenders – Up-country Lions SC - to a one-all draw in their curtain raiser a few days ago, the Ratnam lads got into the game with a positive frame of mind and played to a well-executed plan.
Their rivals Red Star SC, which started their campaign with a win over Blue Star SC in their curtain raiser, never lived up to expectations and played in patches.
From the opening whistle both teams were in search of an initial scoring opportunity to break the deadlock.
It was Ratnam SC who had the major share of the possession in the first half making some teasing moves.
They tested rival goal-keeper Mubarak on several occasions but their kicks were never targeted at the goal and went astray.
Nevertheless, they maintained possession and executed pressure on their rivals until half time, which was an unproductive one for both teams.
After the turnaround Red Star SC changed tactics and went on the offensive. They dominated almost the entire second half and made some teasing moves but they failed to put the finishing touches.
Ratnam SC, on the other hand, put a mediocre performance in the second passage of the game, and the difference between both sides was the Ratnam goal-keeper, who played a pivotal role between the posts to save his team from defeat.
